Music Toward the Future

The founding spirit of Korean National Symphony Orchestra(KNSO) is rooted in the dream of creating "a sanctuary for musicians devoted solely to music." In 1989, the "Yongpyeong Music Camp," inspired by the Tanglewood Music Festival, was established to nurture the dreams of future generations. Over nine years, the camp welcomed over 1,600 students and 170 domestic and international faculty members. This spirit continues today, fostering musical talents in performance, composition, and conducting, and pursuing the co-growth of the classical music scene in Korea.

KNSO supports the future generation to fully realize their dreams through <KNSO International Academy> for young musicians, <Composers’ Atelier> for realizing compositional dreams, <Conductor’s Workshop> and <KNSO International Conducting Competition> which provide opportunities for young Korean conductors.

KNSO International Academy

The KNSO conducts a one-year intensive orchestra education program to expand the experience and opportunities for young musicians, who dream of becoming an orchestra member in international arena.

It has introduced the mid-to-long-term composer cultivation system in which composers can contemplate to their heart’s content and study the orchestra, to facilitate creative endeavors in classical music.
The atelier is held every two years and is aimed at composers between the ages of 23 and 39. The Composer who is chosen as the best composer will be given the opportunity to work as a composer-in-residence at the KNSO for two years

KNSO Conductors’ workshop

There are only a few music universities in South Korea with dedicated conducting departments. This indicates that despite the importance and influence of conductors in the classical music scene, there is no clear path for training conductors within the country. In response to this issue, we have established a platform where Korean conductors can gain valuable stage experience and develop personal marketing and classical management skills. The KNSO International Conducting Competition is held annually and is open to any Korean conductor under the age of 39, except in the years when it hosts the international competition.
